April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), a time to raise awareness about sexual assault and show support for survivors. Sexual assault can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, or sexual orientation, and it is important to raise awareness and educate others about this issue. Here are ten ways you can raise awareness for SAAM and support survivors of sexual assault:

  1. Wear teal: Teal is the official color of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Wear a teal ribbon or clothing item to show your support for survivors.

  2. Share on social media: Use your social media platforms to share information about SAAM, share survivor stories, and post resources for those who may need them.

  3. Attend events: Attend SAAM events in your community. Many organizations host events like candlelight vigils, panel discussions, and fundraisers to raise awareness.

  4. Volunteer: Volunteer with a local organization that provides services to survivors of sexual assault. You can offer your time, skills, and resources to help support survivors.

  5. Educate yourself: Educate yourself on the issue of sexual assault. Read books, articles, and watch documentaries to learn more about the issue and how it affects survivors.

  6. Donate: Donate to organizations that provide services to survivors of sexual assault. Your donation can help fund counseling services, crisis hotlines, and other programs that support survivors.

  7. Speak out: Speak out against sexual assault and the culture that perpetuates it. Challenge harmful attitudes and behaviors, and encourage others to do the same.

  8. Support survivors: If you know someone who has experienced sexual assault, offer your support. Listen to them, believe them, and help them access resources they may need.

  9. Advocate for change: Advocate for policies and legislation that support survivors of sexual assault. Contact your elected officials and urge them to support policies that address sexual violence.

  10. Take care of yourself: It can be emotionally taxing to work towards ending sexual assault and supporting survivors. Take care of yourself by practicing self-care, seeking support when needed, and knowing your limits.

Sexual assault is a serious issue that, unfortunately, affects millions of people around the world. At Options Mankato, we work hard to educate about healthy relationships and whole person health.  Through education, raising awareness and supporting survivors, we can let those impacted and their loved ones know that they are not alone. Let’s change the culture together.
